AI has the potential for good, but also comes with risks. Opportunities include optimizing resources, assisting in everyday tasks, and tackling global challenges. Risks include biases, surveillance, and automated decision-making. The benefits and risks of AI are not equitably distributed. The UN has a role to play in governing AI. AI has the potential to transform access to knowledge and increase efficiency. AI risks include biases, disinformation, labor market impact, and safety concerns. Global governance is necessary to make resources accessible and ensure accountability. Key functions of international AI governance include assessments, interoperability, standards development, facilitation of economic and societal benefits, risk monitoring, compliance and accountability, and norm elaboration.
